SpeedUp San Jose
San Jose is developing a community strategy to address the issue of “digital inclusion,” and you can help with “SpeedUp San Jose.”

Despite San José being the Capital of Silicon Valley, more than 12% of our households have no household internet access; in one of the richest cities in the nation, more than 40% of our residents with incomes under $20,000 have no household internet access. We’re taking steps to reduce this significant digital divide.

For example, too many students are attempting to do their homework assignments on smart phones while clustering around school buildings after hours looking for a signal. And not just students are affected. Seniors, small businesses, entrepreneurs, recent immigrants, the unemployed, the homeless, and other underserved parts of our community also struggle for inclusion in today’s digital world, whether they are applying for jobs, signing up for Social Security, or just emailing to their families.

SpeedUp San Jose is a tool that will help us measure one face of the digital divide – the actual availability of high speed internet service in our community. SpeedUp San Jose will let us determine the real internet speed that our residents experience, and this information will help us to develop better plans to ensure San Jose can be well connected.

We need your help, however. With your participation in SpeedUp San Jose, we can learn more about which neighborhoods consistently have slow Internet connections, or where there is not much service at all.

Please help us by taking an internet speed test.
