Private Tree Removal Permit Process Improvements
The City of San José is reviewing private tree removal permit requirements to identify streamlining opportunities. Currently, ordinance-sized trees (56 inches or more in circumference) and City Council designated heritage trees typically require a staff-level Planning Director hearing before any tree removal permit is granted. City staff will provide a brief introduction and presentation, and accept comments and suggestions regarding potential changes in the current tree removal ordinance and permit process.

Goals
  • Reduce both processing time and applicant expense 
  • Align tree removal permitting with arboricultural industry standards
  • Be more consistent with other Bay Area public agency best practices
  • Retain and enhance the City urban forest
