The San José Fire Department's (SJFD) core mission is to serve the community by protecting life, property, and the environment through prevention and response. The department protects approximately 200 square miles of terrain that includes residential, commercial, high-rise, and wildland interface areas.

NOW OPEN - Apply Now for Firefighter-Recruit (Paramedic) and Firefighter-Recruit (EMT)

The San José Fire Department is now accepting applications for both Firefighter-Recruit (Paramedic) and Firefighter-Recruit (EMT) for anticipated August 2014 Fire Recruit Academy. Applications will be submitted through the National Testing Network (NTN), who will also be conducting the written examination and the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) on behalf of the Department. 

The San José Fire Department offers full testing services for the position of Firefighter-Recruit through National Testing Network, Inc.  To fill out an application and schedule a test, go to, select Fire and sign up for the San Jose Fire Department. 

What to expect at the website:

  • Review all information related to the San Jose Fire Department firefighter position, including minimum requirements, salary and benefits.
  • Detailed information about the testing process for both the entry level test and CPAT testing.
  • Opportunity to take online practice tests at
  • Schedule your own convenient test time. Tests are offered multiple times a week, including Saturdays.
  • Take high quality job simulation tests in a standardized, fair testing environment.

The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) will be used for the physical ability portion of the testing process. Candidates will have the option to take the CPAT directly from NTN or provide NTN with proof of successful completion of the test from another agency. Information regarding the CPAT is available at

Upon completion of the entry level exam and CPAT testing, all candidate scores are automatically forwarded to the City of San José.  Candidates who attain a passing score on both the entry level exam and the physical abilities test will be placed in the qualified candidate group for Firefighter Recruit.  The City of San José will contact candidates in the qualified candidate group and will invite them to continue to participate in other stages of the selection process. 

National Testing Network is a service provided to conduct entry level testing and CPAT testing in a standardized, professional environment. National Testing Network does not replace the City of San Jose responsibility and decision making in the testing process.  All candidate results are provided to the City of San José where the final decisions are made.

Please Note: Candidates must apply through the NTN website. Hard copy applications will not be accepted. Applications will not be accepted by the San José Fire Department or the City of San Jose.

Candidates will have until Friday, April 25, 2014 to complete the application and written testing process.
