Commercial Composting

Composting
Composting organic waste creates a cycle of production and soil restoration that is sustainable. However, composting where the organic waste is generated is not always practical or feasible, so San José is fortunate to have four local commercial compost facilities some of which process organic material from San José homes, apartments, condominiums, and businesses. The organic compost is sold primarily to farmers in the area as well as material yards and landscapers.

Problems Caused by Organic Materials in Landfills
When food scraps, yard trimmings, or other organic material get landfilled, they cause multiple problems including odors, vermin, and the creation of methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. This material also consumes valuable space in our landfills, and wastes nutrients that can help soil hold water and remain healthy for plants.

Studies of San José waste show food scraps comprise approximately:
  • 20% of material sent to landfills by schools
  • 15% of material sent to landfills by businesses
  • 40% of material sent to landfills from a single family home
