Extra garbage sticker

Place carts side-by-side in the street, two feet apart and with wheels against the curb. Do not overfill your carts; lids must be completely closed. Contents of the cart cannot exceed 60 lbs. If your yard trimmings cart is full, place extra yard trimmings loose in the street.

Keep all carts five feet away from anything that may block the collection truck, including yard trimmings piles, parked cars, and basketball hoops.

Keep track of your carts. Write your cart serial numbers on your copy of the Recycling Guide. If your carts are lost, stolen or damaged, contact your recycling collection company directly. Look up your recycling collection company to find contact information.

Loose in the Street Yard Trimming Piles
Loose in the street yard trimming piles should be no more than five feet by five feet, one foot out from the curb, and at least five feet from other piles, carts or parked cars.

Used Motor Oil & Filters
Oil filter bags and oil jugs, should go on the curb next to carts and piles. The truck driver will leave replacements.

Extra Material

Extra Recyclables
In San José, collection of recyclables is unlimited. However, the lid of your recycling cart must be closed when you set your cart out at curbside for collection. Place extra recyclables in paper bags or clear plastic bags on the curb near the recycling cart.

Extra Cardboard
Flatten and cut cardboard so it fits loosely inside your cart. If you have more cardboard than your cart will hold, flatten and cut it into pieces no larger than four feet by four feet and lean them against the cart.

Extra Garbage
Extra garbage stickerPlace extra garbage in a 32-gallon plastic garbage bag labeled with an extra garbage sticker on the curb near the garbage cart. You may buy extra garbage stickers for $6.25 at all San José libraries, Lucky, and Safeway stores in San José or at the Customer Service Center on the first floor of San José City Hall. Extra garbage stickers must be purchased with cash or a check at San José libraries. A portion of the sales from stickers sold at San José libraries supports library programs. Cash, check, and credit card payments for stickers are accepted at City Hall.

Your garbage cart lid must be completely closed when you set out your cart at curbside for collection or your garbage may not be collected. If you frequently have extra garbage, you may need to order a larger garbage cart.

More Setout Tips
Bundle It
Even a slight breeze can send loose items swirling around your street. Use bags to contain material prone to scattering such as shredded office paper, packing peanuts, and plastic bags.

Close the Lid
Do not overfill your recycling or garbage cart. If the lid is not completely closed during collection, material can spill out and create a mess. Your material may not be collected if the driver cannot empty the cart without spilling the contents.

Tie Bags Securely
Tie bags of extra garbage securely and do not overfill paper bags containing extra recyclables. Place all of these bags on the curb near the carts to prevent them from being accidentally spilled or torn open.

When To Set Out Garbage and Recyclables
Set out all carts no later than 6 a.m. on your collection day, and no earlier than the day before.

Yard Trimmings

Set out yard trimmings no later than 6 a.m. on your collection day, and no earlier than the day before. You will be notified of alternate collection methods if loose collection is not possible on your street (because of bike lanes, red curbs, etc.)
