The City of San José, Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS) has provided recreation opportunities for persons with disabilities since 1972. TRS, a section of the City of San José Department of Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services, provides recreation, education and community services to enrich the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
To thrive as individuals and as a larger society, people must feel connected to others around them in positive ways. This is especially important to people with disabilities, who may feel isolated and are often excluded because of architectural or attitudinal barriers. Recreation opportunities foster community connection, both in spirit and in activities. Recreation also promotes wellness, boosting physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
The social and recreational opportunities provided by Therapeutic Recreation Services focus on abilities, rather than disabilities, and achieve the following:
Therapeutic Recreation Services is divided into two major service areas: All Access Sports and Recreation and Grace Community Center.
ALL ACCESS SPORTS and RECREATION
All Access Sportsand Recreation (AASR) offers a wide range of programs for people withdevelopmental, cognitive, and physical disabilities. AASR offers a wide range of wheelchair sports programs thatpractice weekly at different sports venues in the City of San José. Cosponsored with Far WestWheelchair Athletic Association, these programs also provide regional and nationalwheelchair sports competitions, clinics, and camps. We also provide socialopportunities and recreation classes for children and adultswith disabilities. Special events and community outings integrateindividuals with disabilities into community programs to facilitate independentlifestyles.
GRACE COMMUNITY CENTER
The Grace Community Center,located in downtown San Jose,is a therapeutic recreation center which serves adults with mental illness andother cognitive disabilities.
The therapeutic andrecreation staff is committed to creating a place where instead of isolationand marginalization, there is safety, acceptance, and meaningful engagementwith others. Members are provided with support in maintaining and improvingmental health and level of functioning through the modalities of therapeutic recreation and expressive arts. The center's goal is to serve the social, recreation andtherapeutic needs of adults with mental illness and other cognitivedisabilities.
Drop in activitiesinclude art groups, process and support groups, sports and fitness activities,nutrition, and programs which teach daily living skills. Grace also offersaccess to fitness equipment, a computer lab, a pool table, and other loungetype areas where members can relax with music, television, or just socialize withothers.

INCLUSION SUPPORT SERVICES
The City of San José encourages and supportsthe participation of individuals with all
ability levels in programs and services. To
facilitate opportunities for people with andwithout disabilities and to engage in leisure pursuits together, the Department of Parks,Recreation and Neighborhood Services provides inclusion support services. These
services include, but are not limited to, interpreters for the deaf or hearing impaired,improved signage, activity modification, additional staff training, accessible equipment
and facility features, and support staff.To ensure the requested accommodation, please
notify the specific facility where the program is
provided at least two weeks in advance.
Once an accommodation is requested, you will be contacted bya Specialist to conduct an assessment, develop goals, and to provide necessarysupport.
