Helping San José Residents Get Back on their Feet

As Silicon Valley grapples with the harsh realities of the global recession, Mayor Reed has remained dedicated to reducing homelessness in our community and addressing the impacts of foreclosures in San José.

  • As co-chairs of Destination: Home External Link - a collaboration to end chronic homelessness in Santa Clara County - Mayor Reed and former Supervisor Don Gage helped open two One-Stop Homelessness Prevention Centers and a Medical Respite Center for homeless men and women.
  • Under Mayor Reed’s leadership, San José now has a foreclosure one-stop center to assist families impacted by foreclosure and to help them navigate the foreclosure process.
  • During Mayor Reed's tenure, the City of San José has received more than $29 million in federal stimulus grants to help prevent homelessness, provide foreclosure assistance and stabilize neighborhoods impacted by the foreclosure crisis.
  • Mayor Reed partnered with United Way to establish the Bank on San José External Link program, which helps individuals open checking and savings accounts, build a credit history, gain access to lower-cost sources of credit, and invest for their future.

City Launches "Clean Creeks, Healthy Communities" Project

Clean Creeks, Healthy CommunitiesPOSTED: 6/10/2011
On June 9, Mayor Reed, Regional EPA Administrator Jared Blumenfeld and numerous other local leaders came together to launch the "Clean Creeks, Healthy Communities" program. The 4-year pilot project is aimed at reducing pollution and improving water quality along a 3 mile stretch of Coyote Creek by employing and assisting homeless individuals encamped along the creek. As part of this effort, a variety of community organizations will engage the homeless in removing trash from Coyote Creek by supplying incentives, training, and a path out of homelessness for up to 50 individuals. The project is being funded by a $680K grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, with local matching funds being provided by the Santa Clara Valley Water District, City of San José and eBay Foundation.
