On June 9, Mayor Reed, Regional EPA Administrator Jared Blumenfeld and numerous other local leaders came together to launch the "Clean Creeks, Healthy Communities" program. The 4-year pilot project is aimed at reducing pollution and improving water quality along a 3 mile stretch of Coyote Creek by employing and assisting homeless individuals encamped along the creek. As part of this effort, a variety of community organizations will engage the homeless in removing trash from Coyote Creek by supplying incentives, training, and a path out of homelessness for up to 50 individuals.

The project is being funded by a $680K grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, with local matching funds being provided by the Santa Clara Valley Water District, City of San José and eBay Foundation.
