On June 27, 2008, Mayor Reed and Santa Clara County District Attorney Dolores Carr launched the Safe Summer Initiative: a program designed to keep San José youth active, busy, and off the streets during the summer months. The Initiative focuses on engaging youth between 6 and 18 years of age through fun activities like block parties, sports events, field trips, and summer camps as a way to prevent and combat gang activity.

The Safe Summer Initiative offers grants to non-profit organizations that can provide safe community events, activities, and programs that give youth the opportunity to participate in programs that encourage outdoor activity and build social skills.

Since the Safe Summer Initiative was launched in 2008, the City has experienced a steady drop in gang crimes every single summer (see the reports below for year-by-year statistics).

    2011 Safe Summer Initiative

Given the City’s continuing fiscal challenges, Mayor Reed launched a fundraising campaign in the Spring of 2011 to make sure that at-risk youth have fully funded intervention programs and activities over the summer months.

Thanks to the support of local residents, community organizations and private foundations, more than $380,000 was raised for the 2011 Safe Summer Initiative youth program, exceeding the City’s initial goal by more than $50,000! This includes $200,000 in funding from the City ($125,000 in BEST reserves and $75,000 from the Mayor’s office) as well as generous donations from the following organizations and individuals:

  • Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen – $75,000 in asset forfeiture funds
  • Shortino Family Foundation – $50,000
  • Reader’s Digest We Hear You America Campaign – $11,000
  • The Health Trust – $10,000
  • Castellano Family Foundation – $8,000
  • Anne Bowers – $5,000
  • Boston Properties – $5,000
  • Office of Councilmember Kansen Chu – $1,000
  • South Bay Islamic Association – $500

This extra funding will allow the City to support additional activities this summer, beyond the initial 35 applicants who were selected via the City’s competitive process earlier in the spring.
