In recent years, Silicon Valley has lost manufacturing jobs as companies sent those jobs out of state or overseas. During the current recession, jobs in the building trades have disappeared as construction slowed to a crawl. Furthermore, thousands of residents have lost their homes to foreclosure. As Silicon Valley grapples with these realities, Mayor Reed has been dedicated to helping local residents rebuild for the future.
- Buoyed by Mayor Reed’s advocacy, San José has received more than $78 million in federal stimulus dollars, which have helped fund job re-training programs, put youth to work during the summer and prevent homelessness and foreclosures.
- As co-chair of Destination Home with Supervisor Don Gage, Mayor Reed has helped open two One-Stop Homelessness Prevention Centers and a Medical Respite Center for homeless men and women.
- Under Mayor Reed’s leadership, San José now has a foreclosure one-stop center to assist families impacted by foreclosure and to help them navigate the foreclosure process.
- Mayor Reed partnered with United Way to establish the “Bank on San José” program, which allows “unbanked” households to open checking and savings accounts, build a credit history, gain access to lower-cost sources of credit, and invest for their future.
