   The community budget meetings are open to the public and are held in the evenings and on weekends to make it easier for residents to participate.

   On 	March  28, the Department of Energy selected San José as a Solar America City and will add funding to encourage the development of the solar industry within the City.
   San José is also proud to be the new home of Stion Corporation, SoloPower, and Nanosolar. These companies Text Box: will join a growing number of solar and Clean Tech companies located in San José and help accomplish the 15-year goal of creating 25,000 Clean Tech jobs.

City Hall Raptors ReturnText Box:    In the early evening on Thursday March 13, resident peregrine falcon, Clara, laid the first egg of the falcon season in her nestbox located atop a utility shaft of San José City Hall.
   The egg was discovered by viewers of the FalconCam just after 6:00 p.m. Clara has since laid a total of four eggs and has been taking shifts protecting and keeping her new eggs warm along with father, Carlos.        
   Last year, the viewers of City Hall FalconCam witnessed the hatching, growth and subsequent first flight of three baby falcons, Esperanza, Hiko, and Spirit. Proud parents, Clara and José, witnessed their three children flying out of the nest in mid-June and flying away from Text Box: the area permanently in early September. 
   José also disappeared and a new male falcon garnered Clara’s affection. The new falcon, dubbed Carlos, because he was regularly spotted perched atop buildings on San Carlos Street, has made a quick transition to City Hall.

  The results of the meetings will guide an update for the MGPTF’s new Strategic Work Plan and future funding decisions for the program. The new Work Plan will cover the period of 2008 to 2011 and serve as a guide for gang prevention, suppression, and intervention for San José.
   The Mayor Gang Prevention Task Force was formed in 1991 under former Mayor Susan Hammer to bring together law Text Box: enforcement, city staff, and community stakeholders to collaborate and respond to changing community needs. The task force is a nationally recognized model that is being replicated by various cities throughout California and other states.
   Last year, Mayor Reed recommended an additional $1 million in one-time funding to support the program. In the March Budget Message, Mayor Reed has called for the $1 million in addition funding to be a permanent revenue source.

   With the seventh straight year of deficits in the City’s operating budget, Mayor Reed and the City Council have organized community meetings in each of the ten council districts to gather input from residents on how to reconcile the estimated $22.3 million shortfall while minimizing the impact on services.

   These community budget meetings are part of a new process outlined in the Mayor’s March Budget Message to increase public participation.  They offer an opportunity for residents to learn more about the budget while sharing their ideas and concerns.

   In addition to the community meetings, the City Council will hold a series of study sessions in May and public hearings on May 13 and June 16. Both public hearings will be at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. The Mayor’s June Budget Message will be released on June 6th and be voted on by the City Council on June 17.
