| Mayor's Safe
Summer Initiative Engages At-Risk Youth
|
In an effort to keep
youth active during the summer months, Mayor Chuck
Reed and the Mayor's Gang Prevention Task Force
developed and implemented the Safe Summer
Initiative. With a series of
mini-grants to local community partners, the Safe
Summer Initiative will help fund camps,
neighborhood events, mentoring programs, and other
activites geared towards youth. Keeping children
and teens engaged with healthy and fun activities
that build their social and academic skills will
help keep them out of trouble and lead them away
from gangs. Funding for the Safe
Summer Initiative was allocated in the Mayor's
June Budget Message, adopted by the City Council
on June 17, 2008. Focusing on fiscal
responsibility and public safety, the Mayor's
Budget included funding for 25 new police officers
and a pledge to add 100 new officers by 2012. The
budget also included additional funding for gang
prevention and intervention programs, school
crossing guards, and traffic calming in
neighborhoods. In addition to the
$242,804 in funding by the City, District Attorney
Dolores Carr awarded $100,000 to the Safe Summer
Initiative. Click

| Community
Resource Fair Connects More Than 8,000 Residents
With Critical Services |
The 7th Annual Community
Resource Fair took place on Sunday June 29,
bringing together city, county, and local
non-profit organizations for a festival focused on
connecting underserved residents to available
resources. Making it a great
family event, the Community Resource Fair also
featured a children's area with a bounce house,
face painting, a clown, and other activities. The
event also included free entertainment from
performers, including Manuel Romero, Tuan Vu, San
Jose Taiko, and Aztec Dancing. Free hotdogs were
provided to the first 2,000 guests by the San Jose
Fire Fighters Local 230. The
Community Resource Fair was started in 2002 by
then-Councilmember Chuck Reed in an effort to
educate the public on the services provided by
local government and non-profit organizations. The
Fair provides information on issues such as job
training, housing, legal advice, and health
care. Click

Green Vision
Update
|
Working to
achieve many of the goals laid out in the San Jose
Green Vision, City staff is currently working on
an update to the City's Green Building Policy.
Mayor Reed has been working hard to ensure uniform
guidelines throughout the region and state for
green residential and commercial development. This
will help reduce the energy usage of these
buildings and enhance the longterm asset values
for companies. San Jose has also
become a leading city for recycling at apartments
and condos. By implementing a new program to sort
through garbage from multi-family complexes, the
diversion rate for recyclables has gone from 35
percent to 75 percent. Apartments and condos,
traditionally with lower recycling rates than
single-family homes, are now adding to San Jose's
record for having one of the best municipal
recycling rates in the nation. This new program is
designed to help achieve the Green Vision goal of
becoming a zero-waste city by diverting 100% of
waste from landfills by 2022. Click

Vision.

| U.S. Olympic
Athletes, Coaches, and Officials Visit San Jose
Before Traveling to the 2008 Summer
Games |
San Jose was
honored to be selected by the U.S. Olympic
Committee as the location for the 2008 U.S.
Olympic Team Processing. Throughout July and early
August, San Jose State University was home to more
than 600 members of the U.S. Olympic Team as they
made final preparations before departing for the
Summer Games. Processing included
apparel distribution, medical screenings, and
official team photos. Team briefings were also
conducted to provide important logistical
information including training schedules, team
protocols, and cultural guidance on the customs of
the Olympic host country. Athletes stayed
overnight in university housing with some of the
teams training in local
facilities. The 2008 Summer
Olympic Games in Beijing will be held August 8 to
24 and feature more than 300
events. The San Jose Sports
Authority was instrumental in working with the
U.S. Olympic Committee to ensure Team Processing
ran smoothly. Since 1991, the Sports Authority has
served as the sports marketing agency for San
Jose, bringing more than 150 premier sporting
events to the city. Click
