Back-to-School Safety
With San Jose students heading back to school, it's a good time to remind drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists to slow down and pay more attention in school zones. Mayor Chuck Reed joined Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio, Police Chief Rob Davis, Transportation Director Jim Helmer, and San Jose Unified officials at Hoover Middle School to announce Operation Safe Passage and the expansion of the School Area Parking Patrol Team.
Operation Safe Passage is a program led by the San Jose Police Department and California Highway Patrol to alert and educate the community about traffic safety. Enforcement teams will concentrate their efforts near school zones, encouraging motorists to slow down while enforcing hazardous violations.
The School Area Parking Patrol Team is an effort from the Department of Transportation to increase parking compliance in school areas citywide. Providing ongoing coverage of school zones during drop-off and pick-up times, the Patrol Team will also distribute educational material on safe driving, cycling, and walking.
