Here in San Jose, Census 2000 determined the population to be 894,943 persons as of April 1, 2000, which figure represents an increase of 112,695 persons, or 14.4%, over the 1990-2000 time period. Since that time, the population of San Jose has grown by over 100,000 persons to become the Nation's 10th largest city.
NEW!
The American Community Survey (ACS) is a new nationwide survey conducted
by the Census Bureau designed to replace the existing decennial census "long form" in the 2010 Census. The ACS is a way to provide
estimates of demographic, housing, social, and economic characteristics
every year, instead of once in ten years.
Full implementation of the survey commenced in July 2004,
and includes three million households nationwide each year. Population and housing profiles for 2005, the first
entire year of full implementation, became available in 2006 for
places of 65,000 or more persons (including San Jose).
In successive years, estimates will become available for progressively
smaller geographic areas. Three-year average estimates were first released
in December 2008, and five-year average estimates will be available in 2010 for
the smallest areas, such as census tracts. Thus, beginning in 2010, and
every year thereafter, the ACS will effectively replace the decennial
census long form and provide reliable data in a more timely manner.

Census workers canvassing San José neighborhoods
Between April 6 and June 19, 2009, U.S. Census workers will be in your neighborhood. As a first step in gearing up for the 2010 Census, field workers will perform address canvassing in Santa Clara County to verify and update existing residential addresses and area maps. This information will be used to deliver Census 2010 questionnaires next year.
An accurate Census count is important because it will determine the amount of federal funding that the City of San José receives. Every year, more than $300 billion is awarded to states and communities based on Census data. Thus, the City of San José is working in partnership with the County of Santa Clara, Valley Transportation Authority, and local communities to get the word out.
Census field workers can be identified by an official Census Enumerator ID badge, and will also be carrying a U.S. Census Bureau canvas bag and using handheld computers. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the Census Bureau’s San José office at (408) 343-8140.
The Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) is a Census 2000 special tabulation providing information on commuters and commuting patterns. CTPP data was released in a series over the Fall 2002 to Fall 2004 time frame. The summary tables below show travel to or from the City of San Jose and other destinations within the Greater Bay Area. For more detailed place to place commuter flow data, including mode of transportation and average commute time, please visit the Data page of this website.
