Demographic Trends Census Brief:

Gender and Age

  • The total population of the City of San Jose was 894,943 persons in 2000, of which 454,798 persons (50.8%) were male and 440,145 persons (49.2%) were female. Interestingly, whereas females outnumbered males in 1970 and 1980, this ranking has reversed since that time. More importantly, gender ratios are strongly correlated with age, as the male population exceeded that of females in every five-year age cohort of persons 49 and under while the female population was larger in cohorts of persons 50 and over in 2000.
  • The median age of San Jose residents rose steadily over the last thirty years. In 1970, the median age was 24.4 years, rising to 27.4 years in 1980, 30.6 years in 1990, and 32.6 years in 2000. Median age thus increased by a total of 8.2 years over the 1970-2000 time span. By comparison, the median age for residents of Santa Clara County as a whole was slightly higher in 2000, at 34.0 years.
  • The proportion of children (persons 17 years and under) within San Jose's population declined considerably over the 1970-2000 time period, but the rate of this decline slowed in recent years. The percentage of children dropped 7.8% during the 1970's (from 38.8% in 1970 to 31.0% in 1980) and an additional 4.3% during the 1980's (from 31.0% in 1980 to 26.7% in 1990). However, during the 1990's the percentage of children in San Jose declined just 0.3%, to 236,124 persons or 26.4% of the City's population in 2000.
  • The proportion of senior citizens (persons 65 years and over) within San Jose's population rose slowly but steadily over the 1970-2000 time period. In 1970, seniors comprised 5.6% of the City's population, rising to 6.2% in 1980, 7.1% in 1990, and 8.3% or 73,860 persons in 2000. The only noteworthy concentration of seniors in San Jose is located at The Villages Golf & Country Club, a senior citizen community in Council District 8 where over 3,000 seniors were reported in the 2000 Census.
  • There was significant variation in the proportion of children and seniors among San Jose's ten City Council Districts in 2000. For example, while children comprised 30.8% of the population of District 5, this percentage was just 21.2% within District 6. Council District 6 also contained the highest proportion of senior citizens (12.0%), whereas the lowest percentage was found in District 2 (5.5%).
