Population and Housing Data
The population of the City of San Jose is estimated by the California Department of Finance (DOF) to have grown by 17,306 persons or 1.8% in calendar year 2007, from 972,190 persons on January 1, 2007 to 989,496 persons on January 1, 2008. The latest population figure amounts to growth of nearly 100,000 persons since conduct of the 2000 Census on April 1, 2000. This increase maintains San Jose's position as the third largest city in California (behind Los Angeles and San Diego, respectively), and the Nation's 10th largest city.
San Jose's population growth can be attributed to continued strength in the construction of new housing, as building permits were issued for over 3,000 dwelling units per year over the 2000-2007 time period. The city's total housing stock is estimated at 307,613 units on January 1, 2008. An excerpt of the DOF's population and housing estimates report (E-5 report) for Santa Clara County, which includes estimates on the number of housing units by structure type, housing vacancy rate, and persons per household, is available below.
