South Campus District Plan

Introduction

Building on the success of the City/University joint development of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, the City of San José and San José State University have initiated a new joint planning effort - The South Campus District Plan. The joint planning effort for the South Campus District Plan will evaluate potential land uses and shared opportunities to create a dynamic, multi-purpose recreation district in the South Campus/Municipal Stadium/Kelley Park/Logitech Ice/Story Road Landfill area and its immediate environs (please see the Study Area Map ) that will serve both organizations and the community-at-large.

The City and San José State University envision the South Campus District as having the potential to provide improved recreation amenities for area residents, a regional amenity for sports events and tournaments (youth, amateur, and professional), while continuing to meet campus academic, intramural, club sports, faculty/staff, and intercollegiate needs. Additional opportunities may include improved parking capacity and improved pedestrian accessibility throughout the area.

This joint planning effort is envisioned to be completed in approximately 18 to 24 months. At this time, the City and University are in the initial project phase of data gathering and existing facility assessment. Understanding that many diverse community groups will have an interest in the vision, the plan development, and ultimately, the outcome of the South Campus District Plan, we will be developing a public engagement process that is anticipated to occur during approximately 6 to 12 months of the overall project timeline. The community engagement process is envisioned to begin in mid 2007.

If you would like to be kept apprised of progress on this joint planning effort, please contact Senior Planner Juan Borrelli by e-mail at: juan.borrelli@sanjoseca.gov or by phone at: (408) 535-7709 to be added to our mailing list for this project.
