Grace Community Center is a diverse therapeutic recreation program, serving people with mental disabilities. Participants are offered a variety of opportunities to become more self-sufficient, improve their self-esteem, develop life skills, and connect with their peers. Grace provides volunteers the opportunity to interact with a well-established community organization. Volunteers are essential to the success of the program and its participants, by providing support in all facets of the program. Volunteering at Grace, through hands on interaction and connection with people, can be an enlightening and rewarding experience, ultimately inspiring personal growth. Grace Volunteers gain a more profound understanding of people affected by mental illness and/or developmental disabilities.



Duties include but are not limited to:


· Assist in therapeutic recreation programs, including set-up and clean-up
· Assist with and/or observe the facilitation of therapeutic discussion groups
· Develop and implement special activities under staff supervision
· Assist with the preparation, production and clean-up of GCC’s annual special events
· Special projects including posters/flyer creation, art supplies organization, display decoration, etc.
· Participate in free recreation activities with participants including computer lab assistance, billiards, ping-pong, cards, board games, piano, and guitar playing
· Lunch preparation, serving, and clean-up

 


Desired Qualifications:


· Desire to help people who have a disability
· Experience working with people and an outgoing personality is a plus
· Ability to commit to a regular volunteer schedule
· Ability to follow written and oral directions
· Ability to work independently and/or in a group
· Possess basic computer skills or the willingness to learn
· Some knowledge of mental health and/or therapeutic recreation also a plus.




Minimum Age Requirement:

Adults (18+) preferred. Minors must have a parent/guardian present upon application submission to acknowledge permission.


Training provided:

On the job training available, based on individual volunteer needs & assigned duties
