City Wide Adapted Sports, Social Recreation, and Mental Health Programs

Social Recreation Programs

Simply Cooking

This introductory course for adults with developmental disabilities covers basic kitchen safety,menu planning, and preparing simple dishes. Menus will include breakfast , lunch, dinners, and deserts. Class includes lecture, observation, and hands on preparation. Students will receive instructional materials to take home each week. Class is conducted in a teaching kitchen which utilizes gas burners. Staffing ratio is 4:1.

Location: Almaden Community Center

Monthly Social

Come join adults with different types of disabilities for a movie, bingo, coffee or other social events. Sure to be a fun night for all! Participants must be able to attend with minimal assistance from staff or should bring an attendant. The first Tuesday of each month.

Location: Mayfair Community Center

Hip Hop Dance

Come learn some hip hop dance moves and get some exercise! This class will have great music, a great instructor, and great friends. Staff will be on hand to assit individuals who need extra help.

Leisure Club

This club is a leisure education program designed to develop leisure awareness interests and social skills for individuals with developmental disabilities. Activities include crafts, games, music and special events. Individuals must be able to understand simple directions and require minimal supervision. Snacks will be provided each week. Staff ratio is approximately 1 staff to every 4 participants.

Location: Evergreen Community Center, Mayfair Community Center, and Camden Community Center

Around the Town Club

This social club utilizes community trips as a means to improve socialization, leisure awareness and independent living skills. Community trips and events include movies, bowling, bocce ball, dinner, shopping, etc. Members must be able to participate with minimal assistance. Snacks may be provided on some nights. The group meets the first night of each eight week session to decide on what activities and events they would like to do at each session. Staff ratio is approximately 1 staff to every 6 participants. Transportation is not provided.

Adapted Bowling

This bowling class is designed for individuals with disabilities ages 11 years and older. Sportsmanship teamwork, and individual skills are taught for all levels of bowlers. Staff ratio is approximately 1staff to every 10 participants.

Location: 300 San Jose (formerly Oakridge Lanes)

Cooperative Dances

These dances for individuals with disabilities ages 13 and up are co-sponsored and hosted by the Therapeutic Recreation programs of the cities of San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and Cupertino. Registration is accepted at the door only. Please call 408-369-6446 for more information .

Introduction to Computers

This computer class is for people with disabilities ages 17 and up who would like to learn simple computer programs. We will discuss internet and e-mail safety, use of Microsoft Word, tips on searching the internet, and other features. Staff will be there to help individuals who need extra assistance. All levels and abilities are welcome. Class is limited to 10 participants.

Location: Roosevelt Community Center

Adapted Sports

Wheelchair Basketball

The wheelchair basketball program is open to persons with physical disabilities who are experienced or are interested in learning this fast paced, aerobic and competitive sport. The “Pacific Spartans” team is designed for adults who use manual wheelchairs and wish to participate in competitive play. Team membership is not mandatory for participation. Tournament opportunities are available. www.nwba.org

Wheelchair Tennis

The “South Bay Smash” tennis team is open to individuals with physical disabilities of all ages and skill levels. Drills and technique of the game are reviewed during practices and competitive play is available through tournament opportunities. www.southbaysmash.com

Location: Wallenberg Park

Powersoccer

Join the “San Jose Steamrollers” in the electrifying and growing sport of powersoccer. Practices focus on basic skills, strategy, ball control, and teamwork. Opportunities to participate in tournaments are available. Open to persons using power wheelchairs. www.sanjosesteamrollers.com

Location: Alviso Youth Center

Adapted Golf

This seasonal program, co-sponsored by the City of San José and Community Hospital-Los Gatos, is for persons with physical disabilities and offers instruction in adapted golf. Components of the program include stroke analysis, chipping, pitching, putting, and golf basics. Food may be provided at an end of session special event. Adapted Fitness

Adapted Fitness

This program, for persons with physical disabilities, is designed to improve cardiovascular health and endurance, increase muscular strength and toning, and refine flexibility and range of motion.

Location: Camden Community Center

Introduction to Fitness for persons with cognitive disabilities

Come check out the Roosevelt Fitness Center and learn how to use the equipment to stay in shape! Staff will be there to assist you. There are treadmills, exercise bikes, weight machines, and much more. This class is especially designed for adults with cognitive disabilities.
