Quality Assurance
 

The Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL) maintains an internal quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) program which is documented in its comprehensive Quality Assurance manual. A highly-trained staff of engineers, construction inspectors, and technicians perform tests strictly according to the latest test procedures. All results are documented and reviewed thoroughly prior to issuance. The lab also maintains an inventory of testing equipment which receives regular calibration from certified vendors, as required by test procedures.

The MTL also participates in the following external programs:

NVLAP Logo National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP)
The MTL is accredited under the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP), administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The NVLAP accreditation process includes an extensive on-site evaluation of quality systems, staff, facilities, equipment, calibration records, test procedures and test reports. The scope of accreditation includes sixty-two distinct ASTM test procedures for concrete, aggregates, soils, and paving materials.

American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO)

ThroughNVLAP, the MTL is mutually recognized by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) accreditation body. The MTL also participates in the proficiency testing programs offered by AASHTO, complying with both NVLAP and Caltrans requirements.
