Soil and Aggregate Testing

Aggregates are an integral component of Protland cement concrete, asphalt concrete, seal coats, road base, and trench bedding. Understanding the native soil conditions is crucial to the design of pavements. The MTL evaluates soils and aggregates for a variety of physical properties, including relative compaction, optimum moisture content, R-vlaue, gradation, durability and cleanness.

Aggregate Stockpiles

Aggregates are used to produce:
   • Asphalt Concrete and Seal Coats
   • Portland Cement Concrete
   • Trench Bedding and Backfill
   • Road Base

R-Value Prep

The MTL tests aggregate for:
    • Gradation (sizes of particles)
    • Strength and Durability
    • Cleanness (presence of dust)

R-Value Test

Did you know that too much dust in...
   • Asphalt Concrete causes rutting and raveling
   • Concrete reduces its compressive strength
   • A roadbase weakens it and may cause failure
