For over forty years, the Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL) has provided a comprehensive range of materials engineering services to the City of San José. The most requested services include:

• Service costs are competitive to those of private laboratories. In fact, costs are often significantly lower.

• The MTL maintains accreditation by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP).  The MTL also meets the standards for accreditation from the American Association of Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) through mutual recognition by NVLAP.

• Test procedures are in accordance with American Concrete Institute (ACI), Caltrans, and the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM).

• Trained staff is able to respond quickly to service requests. Preliminary test results are made available promptly after testing.

• The primary focus of a private laboratory is to maximize profit, while the mission of the MTL is to deliver excellent, timely and cost-effective materials testing services.
