The City of San Jose is building an Animal Service Center to provide animal control services replacing those currently provided by the Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley. This includes animal shelter services, animal control and field patrol services, spay and neuter clinic services, and animal licensing.

Since 1993, the City of San Jose has contracted with the Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley for animal shelter and field services. In December 1998, the Humane Society notified the City that it would be discontinuing services to the City due to provisions of a new state law (SB1785). The new Animal Service Center will be located on Monterey Road near the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds
