Summary
Redistricting Data: Existing City Council Districts
The very first use of Census 2010 data in the San Jose redistricting
process, before any boundary change alternatives can be drafted
and considered, involves the computation of certain summary
“baseline” statistics on existing City Council
Districts. These statistics include the following:
- the total population of the City and of each District;
- the variation of District population figures from the
computed mean (i.e., total City population divided by ten),
along with the voting age population;
- the implication of these variations on the nature and
extent of population redistribution among Districts necessary
to comply with minimum legal requirements; and,
- a demographic profile of Districts, including a breakdown
of population by major race groups and Hispanic ethnicity,
along with a count of housing units and the computed average
household size.
These summary statistics are included
in a series of tables/links listed below.

*Note: the Redistricting Advisory Commission,
at its 3/28/11 meeting, requested inclusion of several former
unincorporated County pockets in the City of San Jose's population
for redistricting purposes. While these former pockets were
not incorporated as of Census Day (April 1, 2010), their subsequent
annexation in November/December 2010 and the ready availability
of definitive Census 2010 data for these areas allows a more
accurate representation of San Jose's current demographic
and geographic characteristics.
In addition, a brief
information memo on the results of Census 2010, including
graphic attachments that highlight several key citywide and
Council District-level demographic findings and trends, has
been distributed to the San Jose City Council.
Detailed
Redistricting Data: Race and Ethnicity, by Census Tract
To facilitate a more in-depth analysis of the race/ethnic
makeup of San Jose neighborhoods, a detailed data table of
the City’s population by major race groups and Hispanic
ethnicity at the census tract level is posted below. These
data can be used in conjunction with the census tracts map
located on the Maps Gallery section
of this website to determine localized race/ethnic concentrations.
