Retiree Healthcare

The estimated unfunded retiree healthcare liability for the City of San Jose is currently estimated to be as high as $1.65 billion based on the most recent actuarial analyses.  Factors that contribute to the amount of the liability include the level of the retiree medical benefit, escalating costs in medical premiums, the increasing number of retirees, and the City's current level of funding for retiree healthcare benefits.  It is critical that the City, in partnership with employees, retirees, the retirement boards and union representatives, take prudent measures to address the liability; otherwise this liability will be even more costly in the future. Accordingly, feedback sessions are being facilitated with the purpose of discussing retiree healthcare issues and soliciting ideas stakeholders have to address those issues.  Please refer to the schedule below for detailed feedback session information.

As strategies and solutions are developed to address the unfunded retiree healthcare liability, information will be posted on this site to keep employees updated.  Meanwhile, here are answers to frequently asked questions regarding retiree healthcare and potential changes.
