San José recently received a top ten "Best Fitness Walking Cities" award. Prevention magazine and the American Podiatric Medical Association evaluated the 100 largest cities in the United States and ranked San José eighth best for walkability in 2007. The editors of Prevention magazine noted, "Tops on the list of what makes a place fitness-walker friendly are safe streets, beautiful places to walk, mild weather, and good air quality." This is the second consecutive year San José has ranked in the top 40 nationally.
With about two-thousand miles of sidewalks, paths, and trails, San José is truly a walkable community. The City continues to expand the walking network with extensive improvements and enhancements. Last year San José installed 450 corner curb ramps to assist wheelchair users and walkers with baby-strollers or carts. San José also installed 4,600 pedestrian countdown signals.
The 100 largest U.S. cities were evaluated using criteria that included the percent of the community that walks, the number of parks per square mile, average rainfall, and number of schools per square mile. Congratulations San José on your Best Fitness Walking Cities award.
