ABOUT DOT | DIVISIONS | INFRASTRUCTURE MAINTENANCE

Purpose:

To provide timely and effective street maintenance in order to ensure that City streets are safe and in optimal condition, efficiently and effectively maintain the City's traffic devices and streetlight system, maintain and operate the sanitary sewer system in a way that ensures proper sewage flow to the water pollution control plant, maintain and operate the storm sewer system in a way that ensures proper flow and is environmentally sensitive to the regional water tributary system and to the South San Francisco Bay, provide safe and aesthetically pleasing streetscapes Citywide and deliver enhanced services for special funded programs.

Operational Services:

Maintain Street Pavement
This service uses various preventive and corrective maintenance methods, including slurry sealing, chip sealing, resurfacing, and pothole patching, to extend the useful life of City streets.

Maintain Traffic Devices
This service provides maintenance and repairs to the traffic signal systems, signs, safety devices, cameras, motorist information systems, and traffic markings on all City-owned or City-operated roadways.

Maintain Streetlight System
This service provides maintenance for all streetlight systems on all City owned and operated roadways.

Maintain Sanitary Sewer System
This service provides scheduled sanitary sewer line cleaning, unscheduled blockage clearing, and repair and maintenance of the system infrastructure when appropriate.

Maintain Storm Sewer System
This service provides maintenance and operational activities, such as inlet cleaning, blockage clearing, and system repairs, to ensure that runoff is able to enter the storm sewer system at curbside and collector inlets and exit at tributary outfalls.

Manage Non-Point Source Pollution Control
This service provides various activities to achieve conformance with the City's Urban Runoff Management Plan and water quality standards by coordinating preventive storm sewer inlet cleaning as well as debris removal from roadways, retention basins, and pump stations to prevent pollutant entrance into the storm sewer system.

Provide Street Sanitation
This service provides street sweeping activities on residential, arterial, collector, and central business district streets, and it removes roadway debris resulting from illegal dumping activities.

Manage Care of City Street Trees
This service provides neighborhood tree clearance pruning, 24-hour emergency tree response, removal of dead and unsound trees, planting trees in new subdivisions, advising the public on tree care, and processing permits for planting, trimming, and removal of City trees.

Manage Special Landscape Programs
This service includes blight abatement in Redevelopment areas, traffic control and street sanitation services at special events, maintenance of the Transit Mall and Special Districts (Maintenance Districts and Community Facility Districts), and coordination of volunteer projects and services for targeted neighborhoods.

Maintain Undeveloped Rights-of-Way
This service provides weed abatement for 850 acres of City-owned lands and 240 acres of bare earth roadsides and medians. Disposal of debris, including that from illegal dumping on undeveloped rights-of-way is also provided.

Maintain Street Landscaping Program
This service includes irrigation maintenance, weed and litter removal, application of herbicides, pruning of trees, shrubs, and ground cover, and water service for the City's 165 acres of street landscapes.

Inspect & Repair Sidewalks
This service provides inspection of all reported sidewalk damage, notification of property owners, follow-up on repairs to ensure completion, issuing repair grants for owner-occupied homes, and recovering costs for repairs completed by the City.
