DOT DirectorABOUT DOT

Welcome to the Department of Transportation. We comprise a team of more than 470 people ready to serve the needs of our customers to improve the efficiency and safety on San Jose streets. We are committed to our goal of exceeding our customers' expectations.

The Department is responsible for services that provide for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods. We plan and program capital improvements for vehicles and pedestrians, and our engineers and planners work closely with other agencies to ensure that transit services and freeway improvements meet the needs of San Jose residents and businesses.

We operate the City's parking and traffic systems in a manner that is sensitive to the community's concerns and that minimizes the risk of crashes. On arterial streets, our primary focus is to minimize unnecessary delays. And on residential streets, our primary focus is to mitigate the negative impacts of traffic. Traffic engineering staff works with communities to identify and solve traffic problems in the City's neighborhoods.

The Department of Transportation maintains the City's assets in 2,200 miles of street right-of-way. This includes a massive infrastructure of streets, sidewalks, landscaping, traffic devices, streetlights, sewers and storms drains. Our job is to preserve, repair and maintain this infrastructure. Maintenance staff, electricians, inspectors and contract managers do that, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During emergency situations, staff mobilizes to protect life and property.

The Department of Transportation believes in listening to our customers, and we will consider any suggestions for improvement. We welcome your feedback and invite you to contact us with any issues or ideas you might have.

Sincerely,

James R. Helmer
Director of Transportation
