Parking Regulations (On-Street)

Identified below are some common parking violations along with tips on how to avoid parking citations.

Meter Violation - SMJC 11.40.090
Carefully read posted signs at meters. Some meters are for 12 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hour, and 4 hour parking.

No Parking Street Cleaning/Construction - SJMC 11.36.190
Certain areas throughout the City of San José have permanent or temporary signs posted for Street Cleaning/Sweeping. Take note of the dates and times of Street Cleaning/Sweeping.

The City of San José also has projects throughout the year to repave or restore city streets. In such cases, "No Parking Tow-Away" signs are posted 24 hours in advance. Take note of dates and times when construction is to be done, and observe posted regulations.

No Parking Certain Times - SJMC 11.36.260
There are signs posted in certain areas within the City of San José where there is No Parking certain times. One example of this: North San Pedro (between Mission and Hedding), where signs posted state "No Parking 4PM-6PM."

Parking Excess of Time Limit - SJMC 11.36.250
Time zones have signs posted stating a time limit for parking; limits vary. Some are for 12 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, and 2 hour parking.

Resident Parking Permit - SJMC 11.48.300
Certain residential areas within the city of San José require a parking permit. Signs are posted indicating when and where a Residential Parking Permit is required for parking.

For Sale or Repair - SJMC 11.36.100
A vehicle may not be parked on a street for the purpose of displaying it for sale. A vehicle may not be repaired on the street except in an emergency.

Use of Streets for Storage - SJMC 11.36.220
A vehicle may not be parked on the street for more than 72 hours without movement.

Out of Space-Metered - SJMC 11.40.040
Out of Space-Non Metered - SJMC11.16.120
A vehicle must park within designated marked spaces whether metered or non-metered.

Parked On or Blocking Sidewalk - CVC 22500F
A vehicle may not block, park on or across a sidewalk or walkway intended for pedestrian travel.

Parked On Parkway - SJMC 11.36.060
A vehicle may not park in an area between the curb and sidewalk, whether paved or unpaved. Commonly referred to as a parkway.

Wrong Way - Over 18" From Curb - CVC 22502A
A vehicle may not park facing the wrong direction, or more than 18" from the curb.

A vehicle may not park blocking a sidewalk intersection intended for pedestrian access.

Vehicles must park parallel to curb unless otherwise marked for angled parking.

A vehicle may not park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant whether marked by a red curb or not.
