TRANSPORTATION OPERATIONS | SIGNALS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. What do you use the cameras for?
A. The cameras are used to confirm travel conditions. This visual confirmation allows operators to make timing changes that best meet current demands.

Q. Are the cameras for police enforcement?
A. No, signal central cameras don't serve this function.

Q. Will highway traffic be diverted onto surface streets with the Smart Corridor?
A. No, the Smart Corridor will not actively divert motorists to surface streets. The project seeks to reduce the impact of traffic and congestion and is not attempting to use surface streets as secondary highways. Currently, many motorists will detour off the freeway when traffic becomes too congested. This unexpected increase in traffic onto local streets causes heavy congestion and is worsened by the lack of signal coordination across jurisdictional boundaries. By working in partnership with Caltrans, County and the local cities, the Smart Corridor operators will know when this occurs and will be able to modify signal timing and provide motorists with directions back to the freeway.
