SERVICES | STREET MAINTENANCE - STREET SWEEPING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are all the roadways in the City of San Jose included in Street Programs?
No. State and County roadways are not included in any of our programs

Do sweepers pick up yard waste?
No, yard waste such as tree trimming and cut grass is recyclable material, which can be turned into compost and re-used. The debris picked up by the sweeper is not recyclable and, therefore, dumped into landfill. Sweepers will pick up some of the residual matter left by yard waste crews, but will not collect yard waste piles.

What can I do to help?
In order to maximize the benefits of sweeping, the curb lane must be clear of any obstructions that affect the operation of the sweepers. Sweeping is a cooperative effort between the City, its sweeping vendors and its residents. We, therefore, ask residents to follow these guidelines:

  • Remove any vehicle parked on the street - Any vehicle (car, truck, boat trailer or recreational vehicle) parked on the street prevents us from reaching the curb lane where debris accumulates.
  • No garbage cans or yard waste in the street during sweep day - Garbage cans and yard waste can not be placed in the street more than 24 hours before pick-up, and should be retrieved in the evening after pick-up. Violators may be cited, and can be reported to the City's Code Enforcement Division at 277-4528. Like parked vehicles, garbage cans and yard waste pile prevent the sweeper from reaching the curb. In general, sweeping follows the yard waste pick up by one working day.
  • Keep trees trimmed - If the sweeper cannot safely drive under a tree, the driver will sweep around the tree. Prior to trimming a tree, a permit must be obtained from the City Arborist at 277-2762. There is no charge for this permit.
  • Repair any damaged curb and gutter - Offset or uplifted curb and gutter can cause damage to the sweepers, and are therefore avoided. For information regarding the repair of the curbs and gutters, please contact Street and Traffic Sidewalk Section at 277-2572.
