Project Milestones The first three phases of the Silicon Valley Smart Corridor project are complete. Four of the six participating jurisdictions' traffic management centers and Caltrans' traffic operations center are now inter-linked via a sophisticated computer network and fiber optic system. A total of 48 CCTV cameras are deployed along the Bascom Avenue and San Tomas Expressway corridors to allow operators to monitor the progression of traffic on local surface streets. Three extinguishable message signs are installed at key locations along Bascom Avenue to direct motorists around freeway segments routinely impacted by incidents and back onto freeway entrances. In addition, 7 pan-tilt-zoom cameras and 2 changeable message signs are deployed along the Highway 17 to allow for joint observation and management of freeway incidents. The data exchange network is operational and allows the participating agencies to collect and exchange traffic data as well as to remotely implement timing changes to traffic signal systems across jurisdictional boundaries. All of these technological enhancements provide traffic engineers and operators with the tools necessary to efficiently collect and process traffic data, effectively make traffic management decisions and dynamic operational changes, and accurately inform motorists of roadway conditions and alternatives. |
