- CARING FOR YOUR STREET TREES
Proper
care of the trees in front of your home by deep watering and surface root
removal will reduce the risk of damage to the sidewalk and curb and gutter.
Tree root barriers may also be installed for additional protection. Root
prune only one side of the tree every two years, when surface roots are
a problem. A healthy tree can be a naturally beautiful attribute that
increases the value of your property.
WATERING -
Once a tree becomes established, deep watering need be done only two
or three times a month during the summer and early fall (varies with
species). Trees five years or younger should be watered more frequently,
generally once a week during the summer. To promote deep rooting and
to reduce sidewalk damage, deep water your street tree. Vertical drain
pipes in the root zone assist in deep watering.
FEEDING - During the
planting of new street trees, slow release fertilizer was placed adjacent
to the tree. This fertilizer will provide enough nourishment for the
tree for the first year or so. After this period, if you wish to continue
the feeding process, semi-annual applications of slow release fertilizer,
16-7-12 Plus Iron, should be placed about 2" deep in the root zone
and watered in. This will help keep the tree growing in a vigorous fashion.
