TRANSPORTATION OPERATIONS | SIGNALS - SILICON VALLEY SMART CORRIDOR

Purpose
The Silicon Valley Smart Corridor (SVSC) is a multi-year, multi-phase, program to install Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in the south bay's roadway network. The Smart Corridor uses advanced technologies and real-time system management techniques to help keep all transportation facilities within the Highway 17/Interstate 880 corridor operating at maximum efficiency, even following a major disruptive incident.

Project Overview
The SVSC project is envisioned as a ten year program to implement real-time transportation management measures through the use of advanced technologies to:

  • collect real-time data
  • process data
  • deliver information to travelers
  • and adjust traffic management devices and activities to reflect changing traffic conditions.

It also includes the development of procedures and measures for coordinating traffic management activities, for reducing travel demand, addressing freeway incidents, and encouraging use of alternative modes of travel between eleven local agencies.

Because the Smart Corridor project facilitates cooperation between the agencies that operate the various transportation facilities, traffic information collected by any one agency is available to all other agencies. Traffic management decisions are coordinated among the agencies, thereby ensuring that travelers have a consistent source of information about all facilities and travel options. Such cooperation both optimizes the overall operation of transportation facilities and ensures seamless travel across jurisdictional boundaries. Cooperative interaction between the transportation agencies is most important during disruptive incidents when travelers may choose alternate routes and modes of travel. The project will also help optimize operations under normal conditions by coordinating signal timing across jurisdictional boundaries.
