Heritage Trees

Heritage TreeThe City Council created the City of San José Heritage Tree List to provide official recognition and protection of trees on both private and public property that are of special significance to the community because of their history, girth, height, species or unique quality. There are greatly higher fines if a Heritage Tree is illegally removed or injured.

The Heritage Tree list (PDF) is updated by the Council from time to time. New nominations for potential heritage trees on your own property can be done by contacting the Arborist’s Office at (408) 277-2762 or arborist@sanjoseca.gov. The trees will then be evaluated to see if they are special enough to qualify. If so, they will then be nominated to the City Council at the time of the next update.
