Caring for Your Street Tree and the Community Forest

 
 

Tree Permits

 

Street Trees

Street trees are usually located within ten (10) feet of the curb in the public right of way; however that distance may vary depending on the conditions of your parcel. Permits are required for planting, pruning, and removing Street trees. Protection of street trees is the jurisdiction of the Department of Transportation.

Single Family Homes / Duplexes

On single family or duplex lots, protection of trees that are 56” or larger in trunk circumference is the jurisdiction of the Department of Planning, Building, and Code Enforcement.

Special Districts

Special Districts are areas within the City of San José that that have authorized additional funding to provide maintenance of the landscape, trees, trails, water features and other items of common interest.

Condos and Apartments, & Other Multifamily Property

Protection of trees on multi-family properties is the jurisdiction of the Department of Planning, Building, and Code Enforcement.

Businesses and Other Non-Residential Property

Protection of trees on all non-residential property is the responsibility of The City of San José - Department of Planning, Building and Code Enforcement.

Parks, Community Centers, Trails and Public Spaces

Protection and management of maintenance of all trees located in public spaces such as Parks, Community Centers and certain trail systems, are the responsibility of The City of San José - Department of Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services.

Creeks, Streams and Rivers (Riparian Areas)

Many of the trees which line streams and rivers are managed by the Santa Clara Valley Water District (external link).
