Caring for Your Street Tree and the Community Forest

Trees on Single Family/Duplex Properties

singleTrees on private property make up a significant portion of San Jose’s Community Forest. Many of these trees are located on single-family or duplex properties within the City’s residential neighborhoods and are planted and maintained by residents and property owners. Street Trees comprise another significant element of the community forest within residential neighborhoods. These trees are located within the public street right-of-way, either in the park strip between the sidewallk and the street, or very close to the sidewalk on the side adjacent to the front yard.

A street tree permit is required for planting, pruning, or removing a street tree regardless of size. A tree removal permit is required to remove any tree located on a single-family or duplex property that has a circumference of 56 inches or greater. No permit is required to remove a tree of less than 56 inches in circumference or to plant or prune a tree on single-family or duplex property.

Owners of properties that have an unusually large, unique, or historic tree may nominate the tree for designation as a Heritage Tree. Because of their signficance to the community, designated Heritage Trees have special maintenance and permit requirements, and may not be pruned or removed without consulting with the City Arborist. Contact the Aborist's Office at (408) 794-1901 for information on caring for, pruning, or removing a designated Heritage Tree on your property. Information about the designation process can be found here.
