April 2007

CMTSJ presents “Thoroughly Modern Millie”
Set in 1922, the story revolves around the adventures of Millie Dillmount, who escapes to New York City from Salina, Kansas determined to marry her wealthy boss - whoever he may be. Shedding her country girl image for the modern look of a 'flapper', she takes a room at the Priscilla Hotel for Women and gets a job as a stenographer at the Sincere Trust Insurance Company. In short time, she finds herself involved with Jimmy Smith, an apparently ne'er-do-well paper clip salesman, Miss Dorothy Brown, a genteel aspiring actress who never seems to have spare change, Trevor Graydon, her no-nonsense boss, and Muzzy van Hossmere, a madcap heiress with a zest for the high life.

Opera San Jose presents “Madama Butterfly"
The story of Madama Butterfly was drawn from life. Cio-Cio-San, the title character, lived in Nagasaki and married an American sailor who was on shore leave, but left her when his leave was over. While his feelings for her were passing, she believed utterly in his devotion and expected to see him as quickly as he could return, as he promised upon leaving. He did return but with his American wife, and only to collect the child he fathered on shore leave. Cio-Cio-San is one of the most powerful characterizations in theatre. It is impossible to watch unfeeling as her rightful expectations must meet with the unyielding reality that she has been nothing but a lieutenant's plaything. Her integrity is heartbreaking, and it is impossible to forget Cio-Cio-San.

Symphony Silicon Valley presents Double Concerto, Triple Threat
Maestro Silverstein returns to lead Symphony Silicon Valley in a magnificent program of three late, great works, showcasing two eminent young guest artists. Haydn's brief, witty Symphony No. 102 opens, a miracle of compact expression, full of both deep feeling and playfulness. One of Stravinsky's last works for full orchestra, his Symphony in Three Movements, then leads us into Brahms' extraordinary Double Concerto. This mature masterpiece demands the utmost virtuosity from both its soloists; it's been said that it should sound as if it is played on a single 8-string instrument, a perfect marriage of cello and violin. We are delighted to welcome rising international stars Axel Strauss and Mark Kosower, to close our 2006-07 season with this unforgettable work.

37th Annual Chicano Commencement, SJSU
The 1st Chicano Commencement was established in 1970 as a celebration for Chicanos graduating from San Jose State College. Its roots can be traced from the 1968 and 1969 walkouts and protests, by Chicano students and Chicano community members, against San Jose State Administration. At that time, during the era of the civil Rights Movement, Chicano students felt misrepresented by the college and that the Chicano community’s needs were not being met. When demands for change were refused, Chicano students and community members walked out of the college’s annual commencement ceremony held at Spartan Stadium and as a result, decided to hold their own commencement, A Chicano Commencement.
