In the City of San Jos
é, street trees are typically located in the parkstrip area between the sidewalk and the curb, but any tree planted within the first 10' of the curbline could be considered a street tree. Section 13.28.400 of San José Municipal Code assigns responsibility for maintenance for street trees to the adjacent property owners. Further, sections 13.28.300 and 13.28.310 require that property owners obtain a permit from the Department of Transportation before performing any planting, pruning, or removal of a street tree. To improve compliance and ensure work is performed in compliance with industry standards and best management practice, DOT has elected to provide all street tree permits at no cost to the property owners. To request a permit for addressing your street tree, please call 408-794-1901, email treesandsidewalks@sanjoseca.gov or visit the City's permit website for more information.
