Heritage Tree Profile - Bicentennial Tree

Posted on September 7, 2018 at 1:22 PM by Colin Heyne

Bicentennial Oak Tree

This month we have a special Heritage Tree Profile on what is undoubtedly one of the
trees of special significance within the urban canopy of San José. This beautiful Quercus lobata, or Valley Oak, is over 250 years old and is one of two such trees in Scottsdale Park, in the Cambrian Park neighborhood. This tree was recognized by both the International Society of Arboriculture as well as the National Arborist Association as a part of their Bicentennial Tree Recognition Program for having been alive during the American Revolutionary Period. Our bicentennial oak is worth visiting, if for no other reason than to see this magnificent testament of the willpower of trees and to be in the presence of a living being that was around before our nation gained independence.
