December Status Update on Google Fiber

Posted to Connecting Community on December 19, 2014 at 8:50 AM by Communications Office

The City of San José is continuing to work with Google Fiber personnel regarding planning, engineering and permitting issues. The City has had productive meetings with Google Fiber in recent months.

Here is Google Fiber’s statement:

“This year gigabit Internet has moved from idea to reality, as mayors and city leaders across America have stepped up and made high-speed broadband access a priority for their community. We've been working closely with cities around the U.S. to figure out how we could bring them Google Fiber, and we’re grateful for their vision, commitment, and plain old hard work. While we were hoping to have an update for cities before the holidays, we have a bit more work to wrap up; we’ll be back in touch early next year.”

According to Google, the project represents a long-term commitment, and large-scale infrastructure projects like this take time. Building a new citywide fiber-optic network is a massive construction effort, and Google is focusing on the upfront planning and engineering to allow a project like this move forward as efficiently and smoothly as possible.

Google Fiber said it will provide a public update early in 2015.
