What's New with Kelley Park?
The City of San José is updating the Kelley Park Master Plan with the goal of creating a unifying wayfinding and circulation plan to tie all the components of Kelley Park together and developing a vision for repurposing underutilized areas including Old Kelley House and orchard areas. The City is assessing existing needs, identifying and prioritizing potential expanded use areas, and will be improving circulation throughout Kelley Park. Information as the project develops will be posted here. The first community meeting was held on November 5, 2015 to discuss concerns and suggestions to further activate the Park. The second community meeting was held on February 25, 2016 to discuss draft approaches for the park and the public's vision and then to solicit community feedback. Two online surveys were created to solicit community input on the vision and future of Kelley Park. A combined survey with both Vietnamese and Spanish translations has now been opened to capture additional community input and will be accessible until Thursday, March 31, 2016.
The Japanese Friendship Gardens are now open!
The second community workshop will be 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm on February 25, 2016 in the Okayama Room at the Leininger Center.
The property on which Kelley park is built comprises 172 acres and is situated near the northern end of San José's Coyote River Park Chain. It once belonged to Mrs. Louise Kelley who inherited the land from her father, Judge Lawrence Archer, former mayor of San José. The Judge maintained a beautiful 600-acre estate, which was covered by prune, apricot, cherry, and walnut orchards, as well as some exotic trees. Mrs. Kelley referred to the estate as AR-KEL VILLA in honor of her father and her husband, Frank J. Kelley.
Kelley Park is one of San José's most diverse facilities, offering visitors an opportunity to enjoy a picnic or barbecue amid beautiful lawn areas and shade trees; a visit to the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo to see the many animals or take in a puppet show; a walk through the tranquil Japanese Friendship Garden with beautiful koi-filled ponds; and step back in time to turn-of-the-century San José at the History Park Museum.
