General Information

The Shirakawa Community Center is 15, 840 square feet in size.

Vietnamese American Cultural Center (VACC), located within Shirakawa Community Center, serves as a place for the community to gather, a home for the community to come and share culture, traditions, and resources. The VACC provides diverse programming options ranging from health, entertainment, and education such as Exercise, Dancing, Computer, and ESL Classes for seniors; Martial Arts and Homework Hours for children; Hair Cut, Parents & Children Workshop, and Women support group for families. The VACC hosts several traditional events like Lunar New Year Festival, Hung King Commemoration, and Moon Festival.

  • Vietnamese Voluntary Foundation (VIVO) offers teaching in ESL Class, Computer Class, and Multi-Support Services to the underserved of the community (low income families, the seniors, the immigrants, the refugees, etc.), that promote a healthy, violence free, self-sufficient and multicultural understanding society.

ICAN Moon FestivalICAN at VACC

 

  • International Children Assistance Network (ICAN) provides many workshops to help parents learn the proper techniques to help their child prepare for and excel in American education. ICAN provides guidance and advice through its workshops and panels of experts. It also hosts Family Engagement Workshops such as Art Activities, Story Time, Music and Movement.

    ICAN serves as an intermediary to promote better understanding of the Vietnamese cultural and traditional parenting practices among the community.

    • Hours:

    • Programs Offered:
      • Baby Care workshops (parents of children under 18 months old). Baby Care educates parents on how to take care of themselves and their newborns in the early months of parenthood. Topics include how to dress, bath, feed, and prepare older siblings for a new family member, in addition to postpartum care. While parents are in the workshop, their children will be in the Kindergarten Readiness Program.
      • Rental Assistance - Homeless Prevention System (HPS): helping clients who need help for rental assistance to prevent of homelessness, provides financial assistance (e.g. rent, deposit, or utilities payment) to low-income families or individuals who are struggling to maintain their housing. 
      • Healthy Youth / 5 keys to raise healthy and happy eaters (parents of children 0-5 yrs old). This program helps parents/grandparents nurture better communication with their pre-teens and teens, gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by their children, and guides them to raise healthy, caring, responsible, and successful young adults.
      • Happy5 Nurturing healthy and happy children or Nuoi Day Tre Vui Manh (parents of children 0-5 yrs old) . Happy 5 is a 6-week public education program with parenting workshops focused on encouraging safe and nurturing parenting techniques, bridging cultural gaps, and promoting discussion of child abuse/neglect to help children gain maximum development in the first five years.
      • Parent Support Group (parents of children 0-5 yrs old). This workshop will allow parents to discuss topics such as culture, relationships, how to raise children, and problem-solving, in a comfortable and safe environment.
      • SEEDS (parents of children 0-5 yrs old) . SEEDS (Sensitive, Encouragement, Develop through Self Image) is a workshop geared towards Vietnamese American parents to educate them about the importance of a child’s developing years (ages 0-5) and prepare them with the necessary tools to help their child succeed in the American education system.
      • Children activities (Sugar Savvy, Story Time, and Story time with Palo Alto Jr Zoo) (parents of 0-12 yrs old)
      • Triple-P (parents of children 0-12 yrs old). Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) is a workshop that educates Vietnamese American parents about positive discipline and building healthy parental relationships, with the added challenge of raising children in America and still keeping traditional values.
      • Youth Support Group (Teenagers). The Youth Support Group program will consist of 4 sessions. This workshop will allow students to discuss topics such as culture and identity, hopes and dreams, relationships, and problem-solving, in a comfortable and safe environment.
      • Digital Literacy (Tin học/Máy vi tính thường thức) (Adults). The Digital Literacy program is helping people to learn basic computer skills such as Accessing WiFi, Sending emails, Instant messaging, Social media, And more...etc. It will be offered in Vietnamese in two sessions:

      • Cultural Bridge Program (all ages). Our Cultural Bridge Program bridges the cultural gap between social workers and Vietnamese American families referred from Emergency Response of the Santa Clara County Department of Family and Children's Services.
      • Healthy Relationships and Communication (Gia Đình Êm Ấm) (Adults). The workshop is about ages and stages of adolescent development, healthy communication and relationships, problem solving and identifying domestic violence.
      • Men’s Support Group (Huynh Đệ Việt) (Adults). Huynh Đệ Việt is a program that aids Vietnamese men in sharing, reframing, and addressing issues related to parenting, marriage, relationships, gambling, etc.
      • Parent Cafe (Adults). Our Parent Cafe program is a series of guided workshops that discuss a new topic in each session, designed to nurture the spirit of family. This is a peer-to-peer learning process that fosters meaningful relationships while empowering participants to exercise healthy practices.
      • Women Support Group (Chị Em Sống Vui) (Adults). Chị Em Sống Vui is designed to assist Vietnamese women in sharing, reframing, and addressing issues related to parenting, marriage, relationships, etc. The group inspires and empowers Vietnamese women to live a happier and healthier life, care for their children and family, and take charge of their own destiny.
      • Radio Talk (Adults). Tune in every Saturday from 3:00 - 3:30 p.m. on the 1500 AM radio to hear about topics ranging from school readiness to your child's health. Live shows are scheduled on the first Saturday of each month.
      • Internet discount (ACP): to help people to apply for the ACP program. The Affordable Connectivity Program is an FCC benefit program that helps ensure that households can afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare and more. The benefit provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service for eligible households.
      • Exercise class: Promoting good health and body flexibility.
      • Conversational English Workshop: The workshop is about: Ages and Stages of adolescent development; Social and communication skills - focus on teenagers; building healthy relationships; bridging the cultural gap in parenting; domestic violence and services; identifying problems and steps of problem-solving.
      • Health Forums: Health Studies on Asian and Vietnamese health and lifestyle that relates to:
        • Air Quality and Health: to increase awareness and understanding about air quality and its impact on people’s health in the Vietnamese community in Santa Clara County (San Jose area) through one-on-one community outreach, community forums, ethnic media, and social media. 
        • VIP (The Vietnamese Insights into Aging Program): aims to understand factors that impact thinking and memory in the Vietnamese American community. 
        • CARE (Collaborative Approach for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Research and Education): research study to improve their health, aim to engage, educate and recruit 10,000 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (including 2500 Vietnamese Americans) into a potential participant registry for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), and other aging-related topics such as mental health.
