Teens Learn STEAM with “The Great Cardboard Boat Race"
Close to 100 teens, ages 12 to 17, participated in the Department of Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services’ (PRNS) second annual “The Great Cardboard Boat Race.” Teens from the Mayfair, Willow Glen, Bascom, Seven Trees, Roosevelt, Evergreen, Camden, Alum Rock Youth Center, and Alma areas used their creativity and applied science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to construct and race water-worthy boats made entirely from cardboard and duct tape. The event aims to build community and teach STEAM through friendly competition and fun. In addition to the race, the teens engaged with more than 10 community-serving agencies, including Santa Clara County Public Health, Teen Success, PRNS Clean Slate Tattoo Removal Program, San José Public Library, Planned Parenthood, PRNS Lake Cunningham Action Sports Park, and other non-profit agencies.
