San José Youths Enjoy Cardboard and Duct Tape Boat Race
San José teens recently celebrated the second annual Great Cardboard Boat Races event at Mayfair Community Center on June 29th. Nine community centers, ten outside organizations and a total of 97 youths attend The Great Cardboard Boat Race. The participating community centers included Mayfair, Willow Glen, Bascom, Alum Rock, Alma, Roosevelt, Seven Trees, Evergreen, and Camden. As part of the event they held a resource fair that provided the teens with information from Work2future, San José Public Library, Santa Clara County Public Health, LGBTQ Youth Space, and many others.
The teens from the various community centers worked together in teams to create a cardboard boat only using cardboard and duct tape. The cardboard boats would need to fit two participants and travel across the Mayfair pool without sinking. They were challenged to be creative while applying their knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The challenge resulted in a friendly competition with teens gathering from all over San Jose to build a sense of community among citywide centers. Participants were able to walk away with prizes and a memorable experience.
