San José Partners with DoorDash and Nonprofits to Feed Thousands
As the current public health crisis continues, up to 100,000 Santa Clara County residents—including the elderly, immunocompromised and low-income individuals and families—may become food insecure due to social distancing measures.
At the beginning of the pandemic, city officials took quick and decisive action to size up the need among vulnerable county residents and began connecting nonprofit and corporate partners toward finding solutions to the challenge of food insecurity. Recognizing that a sizable portion of the thousands of seniors who rely on daily meals in the County’s senior centers would soon require home delivery, the City of San José partnered with DoorDash, the nation’s leading on-demand local logistics platform, to provide a customized delivery solution. The food program has since expanded to serve the homeless population that has been sheltered-in-place in various locations throughout the County. Ready-made boxed meals are delivered daily to those in need through partnerships with nonprofit organizations including West Valley Community Services, Gilroy Compassion Center, The Office of Supportive Housing and The Health Trust. To date, over 6,000 meals have been delivered to residents across the County.
Behind every delivery, there is a human story, and that includes the delivery worker committed to the healthy, safe, and fast delivery of the meals to those in need. We’re proud to share the story of Anthony, a lifelong San José resident who is a “Dasher” with DoorDash. Anthony has delivered hundreds of meals to homeless residents through this partnership over the past three weeks.
During this unprecedented time, we are proud to work with partners that can act swiftly in order to help us feed our at-risk population. We thank DoorDash, the San José Dashers who are on the front lines, restaurant partners like MOD Pizza for providing nutritious meals, and our nonprofit partners for their service to our community.
