FLASH REPORT #105 - COVID-19 Mitigation and Response
The following is information about the City of San José’s response to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and reduce the number of people infected.

Updates on City of San José Services and/or Operations
- CITY HOLIDAY ON MONDAY: Monday, May 25, the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will continue operating despite observance of Memorial Day. There will be no flash reports issued. The City will continue to provide critical public safety and utility services during the holiday.
- Customer Contact Center (San Jose 311): The City’s Customer Contact Center (San Jose 311) will be closed on this City-observed holiday. An answering service will provide information and assistance to callers on May 25. Non-emergency requests requiring follow-up will be routed to the proper department and handled during open business hours.
- Library and Community Centers: All City libraries and community centers remain closed as part of the City’s response to the coronavirus outbreak.
- Garbage and Recycling Service: Garbage and recycling service collection scheduled for Monday, May 25, will occur as usual. Residents can contact their garbage, recycling, or yard trimmings company to report missed collections, damaged carts, or to change cart size. - Drive-Thru Device Donation Days: The San José Digital Inclusion Partnership is working with the Tech Exchange and Councilmember Dev Davis and Councilmember Sylvia Arenas to host two Drive-Thru Device Donation Days this Saturday, May 23 and next Wednesday, May 27. - Help Name Happy Hollow’s New Lemur Pup: Happy Hollow is temporarily closed to the public due to COVID-19, but the dedicated and professional care of the animals continues. The birth of a female lemur pup is a win for a critically endangered species. The black-and-white-ruffed lemur pup was born at the Zoo on Friday, April 17. The public is being asked to join the celebration by helping to name the Zoo’s newest addition. Learn more from the City’s press release.
- Public Service Announcement (PSA): Dr. Mary Ann Dewan, Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools, reminds us that working together is what helps keep our community strong. A donation to SiliconValleyStrong.org will help our vulnerable neighbors most impacted by COVID-19. Watch the video on the City’s YouTube channel.
Updates from the County of Santa Clara
- Volunteers Needed for Massive Contact Tracing Effort: The County of Santa Clara needs volunteers to support COVID-19 case investigation and contact tracing, to support efforts to quickly contain transmission of the Coronavirus and prevent widespread transmission. Contact tracing capacity is one of five key indicators monitored by Bay Area Health Officers as they consider further easing shelter-in-place orders. The County has a goal of building a workforce of nearly 1,000 people – more than twice the size of the existing Public Health Department. Volunteers from the community are needed to fill key roles. All members of the community are encouraged to join this effort by completing an online survey to share their interest, skills, and availability. The County’s goal is that a majority of the contact tracing staff and volunteers have capability in languages other than English, particularly Spanish and Vietnamese. This work can be done from home as long as volunteers have reliable internet, access to a computer, and a place to make private phone calls.
- Disaster Relief Assistance for Immigrants – UPDATED HOTLINE NUMBER: Now through June 30, Santa Clara County residents can apply to Catholic Charities for the Disaster Relief Assistance for Immigrants Program, which provides one-time, state-funded disaster relief assistance to adult undocumented immigrant adults who are ineligible for other forms of federal assistance. An undocumented adult who qualifies will receive $500 of direct cash assistance (maximum of $1000 per household), provided on a first come, first serve basis.
