Updates on City of San José Services and/or Operations
- Cambrian Park Family Shares Love of San José: Seth and Kirsten Reilly have lifted spirits during COVID-19 by creating "We Love San Jose," a coloring book of San José landmarks. The couple envisioned the coloring book as a creative and calming activity for families sheltering in place. Their story is the second installment in a new City of San José feature, “Stories of Hope,” that highlights acts of kindness, generosity and creativity during the pandemic. - 100 Face Coverings Donated to San José Garbage and Recycling Workers and Their Families: San José Environmental Services Department received a donation of 100 adult and 30 child-sized face coverings from The Mask Buddy, a company that has committed to donating one face covering to frontline workers for every face covering they sell. The donated washable face coverings will be distributed to our garbage and recycling workers and their families. During the shelter-in-place orders, ESD has continued to provide essential, uninterrupted services including collecting solid waste (garbage/recycling), delivering clean water, and treating wastewater. Thank you to The Mask Buddy for helping essential workers and their families remain healthy and safe during this pandemic.
- Second Online Job Fair: City of San José/work2future will host the second online Job Fair, June 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The fair informs job seekers of available jobs directly from manufacturers, non-profits, law enforcement, and health care companies ready to hire. Register for the event via Zoom. Confirmed employers are: Amazon, CVS Health, Familiar Surroundings, Global Connections to Employment, Kidango, Milpitas Police Department, Rejoice Delivers LLC , Manufacture: San Jose, Small Business Administration/San Francisco District Office, US Small Business Administration, Sutter Health, US Census Bureau The schedule is:

- Happy Hollow Reveals Lemur Pup Name: Over 3,000 people voted to name Happy Hollow Park & Zoo's new black and white ruffed lemur pup. The winning name, Koa, received 1,115 votes. Koa means "addition" in Malagasy, the national language of Madagascar, the native country of this critically endangered species. Although Happy Hollow is temporarily closed to the public, the work of the Zoo team continues in providing dedicated and professional care for all 150 animals of 60 different species. This new, healthy female makes this critically endangered lemur species one pup stronger, and has provided an opportunity for the Zoo to educate the public about the conservation of the species. Updates from the County of Santa Clara
- Countywide Eviction Moratorium for Residents and Small Business Tenants Extended: On June 2, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors voted to extend the urgency ordinance establishing a temporary moratorium on evictions. In line with an updated Executive Order issued by Governor Gavin Newsom, the urgency ordinance has been extended to July 28. The repayment term for deferred rent was also extended, from 120 days to 12 months from the date of expiration or termination of the eviction moratorium. At least 50% of the deferred rent will need to be repaid within the first six months of expiration or termination. The Board’s action also prohibits imposing or collecting late fees on any rent that was deferred and requires landlords to inform tenants of their rights and options before entering into a repayment plan.
Other Local Updates
- Changes to VTA routes in June: Changes to the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) COVID-19 service network will take effect in June 2020. VTA will continue operating the temporary COVID-19 network until further notice. Beginning June 8, on the Blue, Green, and Orange light rail lines, weekday service will be extended to start at 5:00 a.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. Weekend service will be restored, operating from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Bus service on several routes will resume or be streamlined or extended. Further changes to the Express 181 and Rapid 500 lines will take effect on June 13. For details, visit the VTA website.
