State awards $9 million in grants to support new affordable housing

Post Date:07/20/2020

The California Department of Housing and Community Development (HUD) has awarded more than $9 million from the Infill Infrastructure Grant program to support the development of two new affordable housing developments in San José.

When complete, the two developments, known as Auzerais Apartments and Arya, will provide housing for 200-300 residents. Arya will be located on Almaden Blvd. Auzerais Apartments will be located on Auzerais Ave. The projects are expected to break ground in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

While the Infill Infrastructure Grant program does not fund the construction of housing itself, capital improvements funded by these awards include the installation of curbs and gutters, grading and site improvements, installation of new water and sewer lines, and soil stabilization. As a result of this funding, these housing developments will remain affordable for 55 years or longer, serving many households over time, and helping families break the cycle of poverty.

"Cities identified lack of infrastructure as one of the challenges to building housing," said HCD Director Gustavo Velasquez. "Governor Newsom responded with funding for this program in his 2019-2020 budget, and we're pleased to get this funding to communities where they can take the next step and create more homes affordable to Californians in need, serving multiple families for generations to come."
