EVEN DURING PANDEMIC, VOLUNTEERS ARE THE BACKBONE OF A COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS CONTINUE TO HELP KEEP PARKS CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL
When the story of these times gets written, we want it to say that we did all we could, and it was more than anyone could have imagined - Bono
“Park Volunteers are always more than happy to help our community in whichever way they can,” says Mollie Tobias, Program Manager for the City of San José. Tobias has had the opportunity to work directly with local park volunteers, who in 2019 provided over 30,000 hours of service.
The Coronavirus has changed life as we know it in many ways. Whether it is working from home, maintaining your distance from others or wearing your face mask, our #SiliconValleyHeroes’ volunteers continue to lend a helping hand to our community.
In the @CityofSanJose open spaces, our volunteers were ready to get back out- socially distanced of course. Once the shelter-in-place order was lifted in May, community volunteers united together to clean our parks. Groups such as the Friends of San José Municipal Rose Garden, Kelley Park Disc Course volunteers, Friends of the Japanese Garden, Alum Rock Park Volunteers and the Friends of Guadalupe Oak Grove Park re-engaged their passion to clean and beautify our spaces.
Prior to the shelter-in-place order the San José metropolitan area led the state of California in volunteering, edging out San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles and San Diego, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Park volunteer responsibilities typically include litter pick-up, removing graffiti, taking out weeds, raking leaves, pruning flowers/roses and more. With the help of these volunteers in our #SiliconValleyStrong community, our park maintenance crew is able to focus on other pressing tasks such as mowing, fertilizing, inspecting park equipment and maintaining park amenities.
Whether it’s a retiree or a group of 15-year-old volunteers looking to make a dent in their community service hours, #SiliconValleyStrongHeroes are making an impact in our community by maintaining our parks.

If you are looking for ways to help your city or community during the CoVid-19 pandemic, Silicon Valley Strong calls on the community to lend a caring hand to people in need. Recovery and assistance have no borders. This critical, regional effort seeks volunteers to ensure food security for our most vulnerable residents among the 1.9M people in this County, focusing on delivery efforts primarily on seniors and the medically vulnerable who are urged to self-isolate for their own safety.
