HHPZ Celebrates New Apiary
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services’ Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (HHPZ) was abuzz on April 11 with the #BeeKind event to celebrate a new apiary - home to nearly two million bees. The original apiary was destroyed by the 2017 floods. County Supervisor Cindy Chavez granted $17,500 to help rebuild the beehives, along with donations from the Farrington Foundation, the Happy Hollow Foundation, and individual donors. Supervisor Chavez, San Jose Councilmember Tam Nguyen, and Steve Demkowski, the HHPZ “Bee Guy” all participated. The event included a special bee story read by HHPZ character, Captain Conservation (actor Brian Frink). The Zoo honey is sold as a fundraiser to help protect the last remaining Mountain Gorillas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. HHPZ was the first zoo in the U.S. to support Virunga National Park and their gorilla conservation efforts with approximately $15,000 raised yearly from honey sales.
